History

The company was founded in 1850 by William J. Dudley, an immigrant English shoemaker who established his shoe factory in Newark, New Jersey.  Dudley teamed with James Johnston in 1880 and continued to manufacture high-quality shoes.  When Dudley died in 1882, William H. Murphy became Johnston’s new partner, and the company became Johnston & Murphy.  In 1957, Johnston & Murphy moved to its present location in Nashville, Tennessee.  Today, Johnston & Murphy remains one of the few companies in the world that makes a line of shoes entirely by hand.  The company is also known as Shoemaker to the Presidents, having crafted footwear for every president since Millard Fillmore in 1850.

Johnston & Murphy is a premium footwear and accessories brand providing quality products for men and women, from classic and contemporary dress to tailored and relaxed casual.  The men’s collection offers a full range of products including footwear, apparel, outerwear, luggage and small leather goods.
