J & M Presidential History
William Dudley, an immigrant shoemaker, established his footwear business in the basement of his Newark, New Jersey, home in 1850. That year he offered to craft a pair of shoes for President Millard Fillmore. The President graciously accepted, and a tradition was born.
At Johnston & Murphy, we’ve proudly honored that tradition for more than 150 years. Today, our brand is still synonymous with fine craftsmanship and elegant style, but we’ve also changed with the times. Our men’s collection offers a broad range of products including footwear, apparel, outerwear, luggage and other accessories. Introduced in 2008, our women’s line consists of footwear, handbags and other accessories. The women’s line will allow us to carry on our tradition of handcrafting presidential footwear for every president to come, male and female alike.
Johnston & Murphy is a purveyor of style, committed to the quality, craftsmanship and innovation that set the standards for men and women everywhere—from CEOs to Commanders in Chief
